Green Star is an environmental certification for buildings set by the Green Building Council of Australia.

While there is no Green Star rating for products, products that meet the rating tool criteria can contribute points to a building’s Green Star rating.

Products can contribute to points to a Green Star rating if they meet the following:

  • Recycled Content
  • Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
  • Third Party Certification – Furniture (certified textiles + leathers do not contribute directly, only indirectly on certified furniture)
  • Manufacturer has a certified Environmental Management System
  • Product Recyclability – Stewardship Program
  • Low VOC

The following products from Instyle can contribute points in the sustainable products and indoor environment quality categories.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)

The following acoustic products have an EPD.

Third Party Certification

Certified products will achieve a score of 100%, 75% and 50% (Level A, B or C respectively) in the material calculators. The Green Building Council recognises the following furniture standards:

  • Greentag
  • Australasian Furnishing Research and Development Institute (AFRDI)
  • Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA)
  • The Institute for Market Transformation to Sustainability (MTS)

The following acoustic products achieve Greentag Level A Certification, which achieves maximum Green Star points.

For certified furniture, any textile or leather can be used because they are almost always under 10% by weight of a furniture item. The Green Star rating tool states “Where at least 90% of an item’s total mass is certified to a GBCA-recognised standard, the item can be entered as a certified product at Level A, B or C”.

Please Note: The GECA Textile Standard is not recognised by the Green Building Council.
